MultiTech Conduit® AP/Gateway FAQ's

Why Do I Need To Use A MultiTech Conduit AP Gateway?

We suggest the use of a private LoRaWAN gateway to connect your sensors to the LoRa network for a multitude of reasons, here are our top 4;

1. Control; Public LoRaWAN networks are a shared infrastructure. By using a private gateway, you will have full control over the gateway configuration, security settings and network management for your IoT smart sensors.

2. Scalability: Public networks can not provide you with reliable connectivity. They may have limits on the number of sensors you connect or data rates. With a private network you can add as many sensors as you need without being constrained by public policies. This also ensures consistent and maximum uptime

3. Privacy: When using a public gateway your data is passing through an infrastructure you do not control. A private gateway allows you keep data flows within your infrastructure for enhanced privacy.

4. Range: LoRaWAN is designed for long-range, low power communication. Using your own gateway allows you to position it optimally to ensure reliable connectivity for your sensors. With public networks range can be limited depending on the environment and obstacles.

How Many Sensors Can I Connect To The MultiTech Conduit Gateway?

You can seamlessly connect thousands of sensors to the MultiTech Conduit AP/Gateway.

What Is The Difference Between MultiTech Conduit AP - LTE Cellular and the The MultiTech Conduit AP - Ethernet?

The main difference between the MultiTech Conduit AP - LTE Cellular and the MultiTech Conduit AP - Ethernet lies in their internet connectivity methods:

MultiTech Conduit AP - LTE Cellular:

  • Connects to the internet via cellular LTE network. We provide you with a compatible SIM card.
  • Has a built-in LTE modem that allows it to connect to cellular carriers
  • Provides connectivity in remote areas without fixed internet  infrastructure
  • Can be deployed in a portable/mobile setting

MultiTech Conduit AP - Ethernet:

  • Connects to the internet via a wired Ethernet connection
  • Requires access to an Ethernet port and existing b internet (e.g. cable, DSL, fiber)
  • Does not have a cellular modem
  • Suited for fixed locations where Ethernet/broadband is available
  • Provides a hardwired internet connection

In summary:

  • The LTE Cellular version uses a cellular LTE wireless connection for internet
  • The Ethernet version relies on a wired Ethernet connection to a local network/internet

Other than the connectivity method, both are LoRaWAN gateways that allow connecting IoT sensors/devices to the internet over the LoRaWAN protocol. The hardware, LoRa performance, management interfaces are very similar between the two models.. The choice depends on the specific deployment needs - cellular for remote/mobile installations without fixed internet, or Ethernet for locations that can leverage an existing wired broadband connection
